Some providers limit enrollment for dogs of a certain age, but Petplan protects as early as 6 weeks with no age limit. All breeds are also covered for hereditary or chronic conditions, like hip dysplasia or cancer.
Joy the Mini-Aussie
Eve R.
Much to my delight, Petplan covered two telemedicine visits for my Mini-Aussie this spring. My state is under a "stay at home" order and telemedicine allowed me to continue rehab with my vet. And, on her recommendation, we sent ultrasound images across the country to a specialist for a second opinion–which Petplan paid for in full! Petplan has been wonderful covering things as I've worked toward a diagnosis and treatment plan over the last 6 months. They also paid for telemedicine when I couldn't get my dog to the vet because of Covid-19. I'm really happy with my choice of Petplan!
Sydney the Pit Bull
Mally S.
As a retired vet tech who worked in an emergency vet hospital, I always knew I would cover my pets with insurance. One day, Sydney was pawing at his face and doing weird things with his mouth. I thought he was chewing on something so I looked inside and saw the top third of his tooth was missing. At first the chipped tooth didn’t seem to bother him, but I took him to the vet just to be sure. It turned out that he needed to see a dental specialist and have a root canal to prevent health issues. A lot of pet parents hope that they don’t have these expenses, but you want to be prepared.
Accidental injuries & illnesses
Petplan provides coverage for the reimbursement of veterinary fees due to injury and illness—including coverage for hereditary and chronic conditions as standard.
Diagnostic tests
Laboratory and diagnostic testing—including specialized chemistry and blood work—are covered if they are part of treating or diagnosing a coverable injury or illness.
Veterinary exam fees
The cost of any exam conducted by a licensed veterinarian—including emergency and specialty vets—to treat or diagnose an ill or injured pet.
Prescription medications
Medications prescribed by your veterinarian as a treatment for an illness or accident are covered, including nutraceuticals. Vitamins and preventives are not covered.
Imaging & ultrasound

Cancer treatments
Petplan is proud to offer coverage for veterinary oncology care and cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Surgery & rehabilitation
Any surgical procedures or rehabilitation prescribed by a licensed veterinarian as part of a treatment protocol and performed at a veterinary facility.
Holistic therapies
Holistic therapies—such as veterinary acupuncture, homeopathic therapy and chiropractic treatment—are covered, provided the treatment is recommended and administered by a licensed vet.
Referral & specialist treatment
All specialties including surgery, oncology, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry and neurology are covered.
Routine & wellness care
Unlike a wellness plan which covers routine care such as teeth cleaning, neutering/spaying and vaccinations, dog insurance pays you back for the unexpected care needed for injuries and illnesses.
Preventive care
Any treatment, service or procedure, including but not limited to physical examinations, medications, surgeries, inoculations or laboratory procedures for the purpose of prevention of illness or injury or for the promotion of general health, where there has been no injury or illness.
Pre-existing conditions
Like all pet insurance providers, Petplan cannot cover a medical condition which first occurred or showed clinical sign or symptoms before the effective date of your policy or during the policy waiting period.
Cosmetic procedures
Elective or specialty procedures, including but not limited to tail docking, dewclaw removal, eyelash removal, ear cropping, spaying or neutering elective gastroplexy and more, unless requested by a veterinarian to treat a covered injury or illness.
Liability coverage
Any costs associated with an injury to a person or property damage caused by a pet.
