Kiss and Tell - February is Pet Dental Health Month. Did you know dental disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats, affecting 91% of dogs and 85% of cats over the age of 3? Learn how to brush your pet’s teeth to avoid dental disease and don’t skip routine dental visits with your vet – they could save your pet’s life. Can’t brush your pet’s teeth? Try these alternatives from Dr. Ernie Ward instead. [tweet this tip]

Call Fur Action - Every dog has his day, but cats get a whole month! Celebrate Cat Health Month in February by bringing your kitty in for a wellness exam. Cats are masters at hiding illness, and are prone to a special kind of dental problem called feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions, which occur in about 50% of cats. Your veterinarian can detect them – but only if you go! [tweet this tip]

Spay and Save - Not only does spaying help control the pet population, but it may also benefit your pet’s health. According to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, mammary tumors are more common in female dogs that are either not spayed or were spayed after 2 years of age. Spaying also helps reduce the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer, as well as pyometra – a sometimes life-threatening uterine infection.

Don’t let doggie breath ruin your relationship with your pooch. Whip up a batch of these no-bake treats from Dr. Ernie Ward featuring spirulina, a protein-packed blue-green algae that contains an incredible concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Because it is a great source of chlorophyll, it can also help freshen your pet’s breath and keep him healthy all year long.

Spirulina Kisses

You'll need:
1 ripe mashed banana
1 1/2 Tablespoons spirulina
1/2 cup oat flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 Tablespoon coconut oil – extra virgin unrefined
2 Tablespoons freshly ground flax seeds
1 Tablespoon ground sesame or pumpkin seeds

To make this recipe:
Combine all the ingredients and mix thoroughly. Roll out a teaspoon of the dough into a ball and shape like a “kiss.” (If your dog prefers a crunchy treat, bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.) Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Makes up to 24 healthy kisses. 25 calories per serving (1 treat).

Remember to keep treats to less than 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake to maintain a healthy diet.

Check with your veterinarian before trying a new recipe for your pet, to ensure your efforts – and your furry friends! – are appropriately rewarded. For more inspiring ideas, click here.
