Beat the heat with these vet-authored tips to protect your pets!

Hot Under The Collar - Don’t let a warm weather wipe-out leave you with a Big Kahuna of a vet bill. When it’s 70°F and over outside, the temperature inside a parked car can rise 30° in just 20 minutes, even with the windows cracked. That can quickly lead to heat stroke – a deadly emergency which costs pet parents $1,417 per incident on average, with some overheated pets topping $4,330 in vet bills. Download our Ruff Guide to Summer Safety today to help your pets keep their cool and avoid heat stroke this summer.

Paws For Alarm - July 15 is Pet Fire Safety Day. Did you know an estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by fires? Help rescue personnel find your pets faster in the event of a blaze when you create and download a free, customizable Pet Rescue Alert. Get started today!

Off The Deep End - Some pets love to get their paws wet, but not all pups can doggy-paddle and stay afloat. Certain dog breeds, especially those with broad chests and short legs like Bulldogs, Corgis and Pugs, are not built for swimming. In fact, about one of every 34,000 pet insurance claims are related to drowning or near-drowning. But you don't have to deprive your pet of splashing — Invest in a small children’s wading pool filled a few inches high to keep these pets cool while staying safe.

1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/3 cup coconut milk (non-dairy)

To make this recipe:
Place ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until chunky or creamy, whichever your dog prefers. Add additional coconut milk as needed to achieve desired consistency. Freeze leftover ice cream in ice cube trays and save for another hot day. Makes 3 servings. 35 calories per serving.

Remember to keep treats to less than 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake to maintain a healthy diet.

Calling all pet parents! Nominations are now open for the Pet Parent of the Year Award!

The Pet Parent of the Year Award will honor a special pet parent who goes above and beyond to be an advocate for pet health. While they may not have veterinary degrees, pet parents are their furry family members’ primary caregivers, and one of the biggest factors in ensuring they stay happy and healthy.

Modern Dog magazine is partnering with Petplan to help spread the word about this new award, and they will also have their paws in reading through the nominations and helping select a winner. To top it off, everyone who submits a nomination will be entered into our weekly drawings to win $50 PetSmart gift cards – rewards all around!

Click here to nominate a deserving dog mom or cat dad today — the winner and a guest will get an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2015 Veterinary Awards Dinner in Orlando, FL, in January to accept the honor!
